In this article, we present a lifecycle study of We Dare You , substitutional reality installation that combines visual and tactile stimuli. The is set up in center for architecture, invites visitors to explore its facade while playing with vertigo, virtual environment replicates the surrounding physical space installation. Drawing on an ethnographic approach, including observations interviews, researched exhibit from opening, through initial months plagued by technical problems, subsequent success as social playful installation, closure, due COVID-19, reopening. Our findings challenges caused both hybrid nature visitors’ use which made experience performative—but also some problems. discuss problems faced light hygiene demands COVID-19. analysis contrasts design processes expectations stakeholders audience’s appropriation, led see failure. Evaluating redesign behalf visitors, argue approach further opens post-production process continuous based user input—what has been termed design-after-design —could facilitate similar experiences museum heritage sector, supporting participatory agenda process, helping resolve tension between stakeholders’ appropriations.
